What you see of yourself is only the surface.
Psychoanalysis in plain language, to help you understand the patterns that repeat in your life and make choices with more clarity.
Self-knowledge doesn’t guarantee everything you want. It widens your room for choice, and that already changes a lot.
Below the waterline is what moves you.
Five ideas from psychoanalysis that help explain why we feel, choose and react the way we do. Tap each one to open.
Unconscious
It is the set of desires, memories and conflicts that shape what we feel and do without our noticing. It is not something hidden on purpose: it is what does not reach awareness directly.
Repetition
The tendency to relive old situations, including painful ones, without noticing that we are re-enacting them. Freud called this repetition compulsion. What is not remembered and worked through tends to return as action.
Defenses
Automatic ways the mind protects itself from what is hard to feel, such as denying, over-justifying or displacing anger onto someone else. They serve a purpose. The cost appears when they become the only resource.
Dreams
For psychoanalysis, they are material for conversation, not a code with a fixed meaning. The same symbol can mean different things to different people, and it is the dreamer’s associations that give it meaning.
Transference
When feelings and expectations from old relationships are directed at people in the present, such as bosses, partners and also the analyst. Noticing this is a central part of analytic work.
